Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the ALCAT Test?

ALCAT test results have helped over half a million individuals support their health. Medical studies reflect significant improvement of many symptoms. You can read more about the studies here. Cell Science Systems performs lab testing that fulfills high-quality standards. CSS is in accordance with state, federal and international regulations.

Is the ALCAT Test a food allergy or IGG test?

The Alcat Test is a leukocyte activation test that analyzes direct, pro-inflammatory cellular responses of the innate immune system. It is designed to test for food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are most often responsible for chronic inflammatory symptoms.

The Alcat Test is not a food allergy test. Food allergies involve an immediate response and the symptoms might include immediate hives and anaphylaxis. You should avoid all items to which you have a known allergy regardless of the result determined by the Alcat Test.

The Alcat Test is not an IgG immunoglobulin/antibody test. IgG immunoglobulin testing does not assess or measure a pathological process and may simply reflect exposure and tolerance (not intolerance).

Should I avoid previously reactive foods before testing/retesting the ALCAT test?

Numerous pathways may provoke the cellular response detected by the Alcat Food and Chemical Sensitivity Test. Some may require exposure, others do not. For suspected food offenders (with the exception of true allergies) that have been avoided previous to testing, priming the system by consuming those foods two to three times within the week prior to testing would be best. If you do not wish to consume the suspected “problem foods” prior to testing, it is important to be aware that the cellular response measured by the Alcat Test, may or may not occur for those suspected foods, depending on the pathway responsible for the response.

Should I avoid medications prior to getting the ALCAT test done?

If possible, do not take any medications at least 4 hours before the blood draw. It is not necessary to postpone testing if, despite medication use, inflammatory symptoms persist. However, to the extent medication can be reduced prior to testing you should only do so under the supervision of your healthcare provider.  If you are taking a medication on a long-term basis without the possibility of discontinuing it, the results would be reflective of your current status while taking that medication. If a medication is taken short-term and you have been advised by your practitioner to discontinue it, it would be best to wait 2 weeks after the medication is discontinued.

Is fasting required before taking the ALCAT Test?

No. Fasting is not required. However, we recommend NOT taking any medications or supplements at least 4 hours prior to the blood draw if possible. Being well hydrated is recommended prior to the blood draw.

Can I take the ALCAT test at home?

You might be wondering, “Can I get an ALCAT test done near me?” Upon ordering the ALCAT test you I will send you a req for your draw. I will then send you a list of nearby specialty labs and an option for a mobile phlebotomists to visit your home, work, or location of choice.

Can I have the ALCAT test done while I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

It is recommended to test during the first or second trimester or wait until 8-12 weeks after delivery if already into the third trimester.

If you are breastfeeding, you should refrain from consuming the baby’s reactive foods, as the proteins in the foods appear in your milk and are then passed to the baby when nursing.

The minimum age for testing a child is 6 months and the minimum weight is 16 pounds for babies who are ill or symptomatic. If the baby is thriving and does not exhibit delays in growth and development, no colic, no sleep issues, etc., it would be best to wait to conduct the test after the baby is consuming solid foods.

Is the ALCAT tests covered by health insurance?

No. Insurance plans do not reimburse for the Alcat Test, currently. However, I accept most HSA’s.
