Energy and fatigue may seem to come in waves for many of us living in modern society. We are consistently juggling daily activities with high demands. Our quality of life is affected.

You might think that a constant state of exhaustion is just the cards that you have been dealt with. Perhaps restless nights followed by caffeine driven mornings is a cycle that you’ve come to terms with.

The good news is that your body has an amazing ability to heal. It is possible to embrace the abundant amount of energy you had in your youth back again!

1.) Identify the cause of your fatigue

The most valuable place to start with addressing your fatigue is to identify the underlying cause. It is critical to look at all aspects of your health and lifestyle. Some areas of consideration are chronic stress, sleep disturbances, excessive caffeine intake, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies.

Clinical lab testing is also an integral part of evaluating your health. An annual comprehensive lab panel with Vitamin D should be a baseline to have drawn. Additionally, a thyroid and iron panel done might be helpful to rule out thyroid conditions or anemia. 

 

2.) Evaluate your current habits

A food and lifestyle journal is an educational tool that I highly recommend. It helps in developing a sense of awareness of what you eat and do in your lifestyle, and how it makes you feel. For example, if you see that you skipped a meal you can make the connection later in the day as to why you are tired, emotional, or craving certain foods. From there, you can begin to develop strategies to make positive changes and create new healthier habits.

Journaling is also insightful if you are exploring food sensitivities.

3.) Enhance your nutrition

Rotating your foods daily will help you to consume a wide spectrum of nutrients. Your body needs an array of vitamins and minerals in order to function optimally. Frequent small meals that include protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich vegetables assist in supporting blood sugar levels, boosting metabolism, enhancing mental clarity, and improving energy levels.

4.) Support your adrenals

Your adrenal glands produce many hormones including cortisol, which regulates your stress response. Normal cortisol levels are higher in the morning to provide energy, and lower in the evening to ease into sleep.

When we experience chronic stress our cortisol levels elevate and our cycle becomes out of rhythm. This can lead to adrenal dysfunction and chronic fatigue.

An Adrenal Stress Index test identifies your levels of cortisol within a 24-hour time frame. From there you can take measures to support your adrenals such as dietary and lifestyle changes, adaptogenic herbs, and stress management techniques.

5.) Move your body

Moving your body promotes energy. I encourage you to stand up from your desk, chair, or bed every hour. Get up and stretch, workout, or go for a walk. Physical exercise fights fatigue by increasing endorphins, boosting cardiovascular health, enhancing focus, decreasing depression, and elevating your immune system. It’s a win-win!
